Another Finish...

This was the project I chose to finish after the log cabin quilt. Thank you so much for all of your kind words about my quilt! My son came home from college and was very happy to have the quilt on the bed...he said it did keep him warm. It must have, he didn't have loads of blankets piled on him the next morning!

This batik star quilt is one I started as a block of the month when I worked at a quilt shop a few years ago. I added a lot of my own fabrics, bought the outer border and backing and finished the top about 2 months ago. I quilted it this week and hand stitched the binding down last night while watching "Holiday Inn" with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. They just don't make movies like that anymore!
I've included a close up of the quilting...I had lots of fun with this one. But...here's my dilemma. My original plan was to join Keepsake Quilting's club and send this up to NH to be sold. Does anyone have any experience with this? The problem is, I LOVE how it turned out and I'm not sure I want to do that anymore! :o) I've been to Keepsake and they have many beautiful quilts on consignment. I've found that as a machine quilter, I've really missed piecing tops (I'm not as organized as Bonnie and Judy...can't seem to fit in piecing time, although maybe the part time job and 3 kids have something to do with that! LOL) I thought selling quilts through Keepsake would be a good way to keep making quilts from start to finish and maybe I could quilt fewer customer quilts. I'll have to think on that. Time to head to work...

The quilt is spectacular Carolyn!! Personally, I think if you love it, you should keep it. It's a decision only you can make...would you be happy with just the sraps from it, and a picture?

You did an outstanding job..I love that it's batiks, but they don't shout "BATIK". Very subtle color changes and just "knock your socks off" overall appearance. I don't think you'd have trouble selling it.
Keepsake is just a name and a catalog to me, so I have no opinon about quilts on consignment. However I think most places that sell for consignment sure do take a hefty chuck for themselves. Some around here take 30% or more. I think that's alot...30 cents out of every dollar.

So glad your son loved the log cabin, how could NOT have loved it??? It is a marvelous quilt!! Keep up the good work...*VBS*

I have no idea how the consignment works - although that seems to be one of the better ways to sell. (The people who would buy there in general would have a better idea of the value and more will to pay what it is worth....IMHO)

I like that quilt! Especially the way some of the blocks have a low contrast....

Carolyn- absolutely love the quilt! Gorgeous, really. But you know I have a passion for batik- they seem so full of life. (Holiday Inn is my very favorite oldie. You are so right that they don't make movies like that any more. I was a little girl- the first time I saw it- I was enchanted with Fred Astaire- could that man dance or what? My dad was a very light sleeper so I had to turn the volume down almost all the way- sat about 1 foot from the TV screen. It was very late at night. Such a sweet memory you reminded me of.) I don't see how you could sell it- a gift is one thing, but sell? hmmm.... I think it's a keeper, but if, when making it, you thought you might be selling it, that would make it easier- the letting go of it would be easier. Good luck whatever you decide. Some one will be very blessed by it, either way, right?

Carolyn: It's so pretty and the quilting looks fantastic! I have no idea how the Keepsake program works but I have a couple of quilting acquaintenances who have sold quilts through the program. I was thinking of trying to sell a couple through there too. Let us know if you decide to do it and how it works.

As far as whether to sell this one, I would just keep it a while and see what you think. You don't have to make a decision right away. I'm guessing you'll know what feels right.

I know nothing about the Keepsake consignment things. BUT, unless you have committed to them to sell this, I say go with what your heart says. It's beautiful!

Carolyn, I love this! And normally I'm not a big batik fan! The colors are great and the variation is wonderful!

Love this quilt! Have you thought about keeping it as a sample for your machine quilting? You could enter it into your local quilt guild show? It might generate more money for you as a sample and you would also get to keep it!

If you are set on making quilts for consignment, maybe you should do 2 duplicates at the same time - so you can keep one if you just love it or have 2 to sell.

Just some more thoughts...

Cheers!

Awesome looking quilt and machine quilting, Carolyn! I love the way your Batik collection just sparkles in this pattern.

Good luck on your decisions. You've got lots to ponder. Will you keep us posted, please?
