A few years ago, my youngest decided she needed a new quilt because the Drunkard's Path quilt I'd made her when she was little wasn't quite big enough for her bed. I enlisted the help of my friend Mary to make her a quilt. She decided on a snail's trail pattern and I envisioned a beautiful rainbow of color across a white or pale blue background. However, I told Mary to have fun with it and do whatever she wanted...after all, she was making it out of her own stash! I love how the quilt turned out...it's bright, crazy and wild...just perfect for Grace's personality!
Grace chose the borders for it, then couldn't decide on a backing. She asked if I could make the back out of all the fabrics she had been collecting all her life...so of course I did! Sometimes the quilt is on her bed with the pieced blocks up, other times the backing is up. About 6 months ago, Grace was moved out of her purple room into her brother's room, since he is at college. She chose a beautiful sage green for the walls, very calming. We went to Target and bought the Shabby Chic line of bedding and curtains in blue, white and green to complement the room. The expensive comforter was on the bed for all of about 2 weeks...until she missed her quilt and decided that the comforter could live in the closet...she needed her quilt!
I'll have to take some pictures of the Drunkard's Path...it's one of my favorite quilts that I've made!

What a great story. Every girl knows, "That which is made with love lasts the longest."
My daughter would love this quilt. Grace is so lucky to have you as a mother and Mary as your friend! How heartwarming to know how much she loves it!
What a happy quilt! It just makes me smile to see all those bright colors. And I LOVE the back! No wonder the comforter is in the closet!
I just love the Snails Trail pattern. One of these days.....

oh, oh, I love this quilt! I want to make that pattern and this turned out so wonderful...what a smart girl to choose it over a store bought comforter..and what a gift from your friend. Grace is one lucky girl.
Carolyn - well I would want that quilt on my bed too! It is wonderful! No wonder Grace loves it!
snail's trail is such an unappealing name for such a beautiful quilt pattern -- I love the colours, it reminds me of the beach somehow.
What a great quilt - I haven't seen a version of this pattern as scrappy as this one but I love it more for all the colors.
I always oooh and ahhh over home decorating magazines that make a mish-mash of styles work together - much more personality than the co-ordinated rooms (although they are nice too!). So, I'm with Grace on this one - the quilt is GREAT! I can totally understand how much she must love it - it is so bright and cheery!
Cheers!

Grace's Snail Trail is awesome, Carolyn! I'd love one too...just in case Mary has some orphan blocks....
You know...one doesn't often see a snails trail in the line-up of quilts...or at least, I don't. But it is a spectacular, graphic pattern, isn't it. Mary did a wonderful job with color!
Really great quilt Carolyn!! I love that pattern anyway, but have never considered making it with all colors and no light background, but it really works!! Your friend did a great job!! I love the backing too!
Love the snails trail! Scrappy with just two fabrics in each blaock - I need to keep that in my maybe pile....
