applique question

I know that many of you do applique and I have a quick question. I've been working on my challenge quilt, which has to be machine quilted. (It IS going to a machine quilting show, after all!) My plan is to add applique leaves to my vine, but I'd like to make 3-dimensional flowers to add. So, as a longarmer, I plan to do the quilting before I add the flowers so that they don't interfere with the machine. Is there any sort of problem doing this? It just seems to make the most sense to me!

Thanks for your advice!

Nope, there's no problem doing it that way. I wish I could remember the name of the gal in Colorado that does her quilts that way. I recall a beautiful navy blue quilt that she did a grid quilting on it and then all the 3-D appliqué. You just have to be careful not to go all the way through the layers when appliquéing.

Absolutely get it quilted before you put on the 3-D flowers. The Northwest Medical Teams quilt that I was co-chair for, appliquér and quilter had half the 3-d flowers on it before it occurred to me that they should be put on AFTER quilting. The two borders that didn't have the flowers yet quilted easily. The two borders that did have the flowers were a huge pain in the you-know-what. It was easy to stitch on the flowers afterwards.

I agree, no problem there... I have even added non-dimensional flowers after quilting. I called it appliqueing between the lines.

Definitely add the 3D flowers after the quilting. If added before, they are difficult to quilt around, can get smooshed when rolled up with the quilt, and can actually distort the quilt when rolled (if they are big).

I'm going to MQX -- Let me know which quilt to look for!

I didn't know I was going until a few weeks ago. I know nothing about the show -- what's up with the challenge?

applique can be done before or after quilting on a traditional quilt, so why not wait? Especially with the depth you want to add I'd think they'd "get in the way". Think of the flowers as an embellishment and stitch away later :-)

only thing to be careful of is not showing your stitches onto the back - other than that it sounds like an eminently sensible idea :o)

I don't see any problem adding the flowers after quilting, or applique the flowers now and add the stuffing after quilting.

If you were hand quilting I would think you would be able to work around the flowers easier than trying to do it with machine quilting. I would vote with doing the applique after the quilting was done.

Good luck!

I don't have any advice that you haven't already received. I'm just popping in to visit your blog and say Hi. I'm working my way around the Stash Quilts Ring!

I have added applique after quilting several times. And it works very well. Looking forward to see the whole quilt you are doing now.

I've never done dimensional applique, but I have added applique after all the quilting. In a situation where I wanted the quilting to be from edge to edge but didn't want to quilt over the applique. It has been a good solution.

Seems reasonable to me but . . I don't do applique! :)

I have just taken a 3 day class with Jenny Bowker and that is exactly what she advised to do! (quilt before embellishing)
